Meiring and Suretha's Pretoria wedding was truly significant. And I'm not even talking about the last-minute rollercoaster of emotions, decisions and changes due to the Covid-19 restrictions ...
I owe this guy so much. He has been instrumental in my career as a photographer and in my love for running.
I first read about Meiring in Die Burger back in 1993. I was a 15-year-old Montagu schoolboy with long legs that became too slow for the 100m. I wanted to prove myself. This is when I read about Meiring's track times. I was inspired. I started to train hard. It bore the necessary fruit.
We ran together at Uni, representing the University of Stellenbosch on the track, road and cross country. I even coached him and his brother as part of my final year paper in Sports Science. We became good friends.
In 2004, Adri and I took on a trip through Africa to see if I had it in me as a photographer. I eventually ended up in Denmark for an exhibition. I had to pass through London on my way there and back. This is when Meiring stepped in and offered their house for a London exhibition. He invited all his friends over for one night. They all enthusiastically came and bought up all the remaining prints. It was a huge success.
That gesture meant SO much to me and boosted my confidence. I took the plunge to turn Pro in 2007. I have never looked back.
I am so happy for Meiring. He married an incredible woman in Suretha. They are perfect for each other.
Meiring and Suretha - may God's blessing continue to shower you as it did on your wedding day. You have blessed me so much on Saturday but also through the years. This below is the best I can do to show my gratitude and immense appreciation. Thank you again for everything. You guys are the best! Enjoy.
